Earth Day 2023 in NW Landings

Evelyn Blunt

This year's Earth Day event brought us back to a very familiar place in the community, the Northwest Landings community and botanical gardens at the corner of Udell and Radar St. This Earth Day, volunteers gathered to begin the seasonal lift to bring the flowers and plants into working order.

De-weeding, mulching, litter removal, digging, beautifying and all other sorts of tasks that would make the gardens shine for the community. Over 200 volunteers showed up despite the rain and cold(barely made it to 46 degrees!). Amongst corporate sponsors and residents, we were blessed with over 100 Believe High School students who donated their time to learning how to tend to a garden.

Led by Sharon Clark from Aspirehouse Indy, the “Urban Bloom” project that is the new name of the gardens is making its mark for the neighborhood. Starting as just two abandoned properties, the homes were taken down and turned into both a community garden and a botanical garden where we have had the pleasure of having events such as the Sunday Suppers and the NW Landings meetings.

We are still looking for other interests and ideas for events so be sure to let us know. Even if you just want to volunteer, email us at: rrice@flannerhouse.org.

We can definitely find an opportunity to utilize your talents and giving for such a worthy cause.
