NNW Stakeholder Spotlight: GroundWork Indy

Evelyn Blunt

Adam Velazquez is the executive director at Groundwork Indy and co-chair of the Arts Parks and Public Spaces committee with Ron Rice. Adam took over the role of Executive Director, vacated by the excellent Phyllis Boyd, in April 2022. Groundwork Indy has been an N.N.W. community organization since its inception in 2015. It serves the youth and the community by providing youth (ages 14-22) employment opportunities focused on community development and environmental and social justice.

As the E.D. of Groundwork Indy, Adam is highly focused on renovating the old firehouse at 975 Burdsal Parkway into the new headquarters for Groundwork Indy. Completion is nearing, and the space will open to the public by spring 2024. Groundwork Indy will offer the community better access to the natural beauty of the Near Northwest. We are near completion of a nature trail, providing our community partners with open space to plant their garden via a co-op style raised bed system; the building will also be able to host community meetings, a food pantry, and as our base of operations for all youth programming. Groundwork Indy is planning a "grand opening" very shortly, so please be on the lookout for an invitation to the party!!
